Your Main Destination at New Dammam

.Ash-Sharp Exhibits finally opens its doors at the Saudi Arabian mega artificial island

New Dammam is a reclamation of the area's heritage, combining all architectural styles with a neo twist.

With approximately 159.2 Km2, New Dammam takes advantage of the natural humid environment created by the gulf and introduces genetically modified tropical plants that otherwise wouldn’t thrive in the region. There is no time for boredom in New Dammam, beginning from Ghrab-Bridge Station Plaza, full of social clubs, restaurants, to Al-Wasat Square, where you can find the Grand Mosque of Dammam, and the serene quiet gardens surrounding the area, and finally Ash-Sharqiyah Front with its cluster of apartment complexes, water parks, social dining, and wondrous views of the gulf.

And today, Ash-Sharp Exhibits for Fine Arts Introduces Mājid Alammari for its opening exhibition. Today marks his 128th birthday, and his latest collection, titled My Home, explores the intimate nostalgia he has of Dammam.

Through captures he took in the early 2010s, he tells a story of effervescent nostalgia, where the past feels in reach. “I always think of memories, as if they’re my present. I do not relive those moments; it is a vivid occurrence, a replay of the past observed through new perspectives.”

We asked Mājid to give additional context for his works, “Home”, “Red”, and finally “Potential”.

HOME

“In the late 2000s and early 10s, I used to see my maternal grandmother every day. She’s the only grandparent I have had any semblance of connection with, for the others have passed.

My grandmother passed in 2013ce at the age of 92, which was extremely old back then. I believe the life expectancy was only around 70 years old.

I remember her kind laughter, how funny and gentle she was. She lives on through me and everyone who knew her.

In this piece, you can see what looks to be the rings of a planet, when in actuality it is stretched out window guard railings of her house, the square on the bottom right that is chip-shaped has the whole house inside, overlapped by a bee pollinating a jasmine flower… to which I remember how sublime the aroma was even during the heat, it was bliss.”

That is a detailed yet brief outlook of a precious connection. How would you describe your middle painting, “Red”?

“For my whole life, I have had a peculiar relationship with the color red; it is rage, blood, shyness, beauty, yet whenever I’m physically close to it, as in wearing or touching something red, the tides turn against me, inescapable and trying to drown me. I am hoping that somehow by creating this piece that I might be able to make amends with it, and I may never provoke it, somehow, ever again.”

RED

Visible light is a reflection, and it can definitely reflect on one’s day.

How about your final piece of the collection? It appears that “Potential” is a darker version of “Home”.

“Good catch! I wanted to capture how in a ‘home’ everyone has potential to be someone who matters to many, since I was very young I wanted to create something that would outlast my being and everything I have ever loved and connect with as many people as I can, to make them feel as I have felt, own something I’ve made, and by that, I live on.

POTENTIAL

In ‘Potential’ I have gathered portraits of my youth and mid twenties, those are the times when we feel lost and that we could do so much, little did we know that it simply wasn’t time.”

Mājid’s early works have always been about uncertainty and indecision, but now it seems that he has reached a point where he can finally look back and remember where it all began.

We are delighted that the gallery is open 24 hours and 7 days a week. Mājid’s collection is something to behold in person alongside many great works displayed at the gallery.
